The world is asking the wrong question about AI
There is an entire industry built around one question: was this written by AI? Tools like GPTZero, Originality, and Pangram have raised millions to answer it. Universities are buying site licences and employers are scanning submissions. The assumption is that if you can identify AI-generated text, you have solved the problem. This assumption is incorrect. The question was never whether AI wrote it, the question is whether what was written is actually correct.
Detection answers authorship. It does not answer accuracy.
AI detection tools tell you one thing: the probability that a piece of text was generated by a language model. It does not tell you whether the facts are correct, whether the citations are real, or whether the logic holds up. These do not tell you whether the tone is even appropriate for the audience.
A document can pass every AI detector on the market and still contain fabricated statistics, invented sources, and flawed reasoning. It passed the authorship test yet it failed the accuracy test. And the accuracy test is the one that determines whether you lose marks, lose a client, or lose credibility.
Conversely, a document can be flagged as AI-generated and be entirely correct. A professional might use AI to draft a report, then spend an hour verifying every fact, rewriting key sections, and tailoring the tone. The detector flags it. But the work is sound.

The detection industry is solving yesterday's problem
When ChatGPT launched in late 2022, the immediate panic was about authorship. Who wrote this? Was it a person or a machine? That question made sense in a world where AI usage was new, unauthorised, and hidden.
We are no longer in that world. Verification is not something a language model can do for itself. A model cannot fact-check its own output because it does not know what is true. It generates text based on patterns, not knowledge. When it produces a statistic, it is not retrieving it from a database. It is predicting what a plausible statistic might look like in that context.
This is why verification requires domain experts: people with real qualifications, real experience, and the ability to evaluate whether a claim holds up in their field. A medical researcher can spot a fabricated citation. A financial analyst can identify when a figure does not match public filings. A legal professional can flag when a clause contradicts current regulation.
No AI detector can do this. No automated tool can replace the judgement of someone who understands the subject.
What this means for universities
Universities have spent millions on AI detection software. The result has been a wave of false positives, appeals, and eroded trust between students and institutions. Students who wrote their own work are being flagged. Students who used AI but verified every claim are being penalised the same as those who submitted raw, unedited output.
The better question for universities is not "did the student use AI?" but "is the work accurate, well-reasoned, and properly cited?" That is the standard that matters in professional life, and it is the standard that should matter in education.
What this means for businesses
Businesses face a different version of the same problem. AI is being used to write reports, proposals, marketing copy, compliance documents, and client communications. The risk is not that AI was used. The risk is that what was produced is wrong.
A single hallucinated statistic in a board report can lead to poor decisions. A fabricated citation in a compliance document can result in regulatory action. An inaccurate claim in client-facing material can damage trust and invite legal exposure.
Detection does not solve this. Verification does.
